Recent studies have indicated that you should not sit for too long or for too long periods of time if you want to protect your health. As a matter of fact, some have even compared sitting to smoking.

IS THERE A DOWNSIDE TO WALKING 10,000 STEPS A DAY?
Walking 10,000 steps a day is just too much for many people. You would need to add an hour of walking in order to get from the average of 4,000 to 10,000 steps a day. There are a number of factors involved in this, including finding the time and being in shape. There are two things that are difficult about both.
Most of the time, this is what happens. A new fitness journey begins for someone who decides that it is the right time. A couple purchases a Fitbit and decide to set a daily goal of 10,000 steps, since that’s “what’s expected of you.” They begin walking enthusiastically with their Fitbits. A person may feel that emotion for a couple of days and then come back to reality.
They are tired and it won’t appeal to them at all to spend an extra hour walking instead of doing something more enjoyable. Plus, there are no immediately noticeable results from all that walking. Pretty soon the 10,000 steps goal is discarded.
The only problem with walking 10,000 steps a day is that it is a terrible goal to start with. It is also possible that you do not need to walk quite that much if your main health and fitness goal is just to become more active than you are now. I think that is a fine goal to aim for, and it does not require that one walk 10,000 steps a day.
It is fine to strive for 10,000 steps per day as a long-term goal if you intend to do more than simply get more active. A great way to start a fitness habit is to start small so that it becomes a lifelong habit. In order to generate momentum, it is necessary to create a habit. You will get it done in a sustainable and even enjoyable way in that you will maintain a momentum towards 10,000 steps.
